A PHOTOGRAPHER has captured the moment a deer gave birth in a woodland in Basingstoke.

The rare sight was captured on camera by Anthony Hutchinson, who shared a series of photos in the Basingstoke Gazette Camera Club group on Facebook.

Anthony witnessed the moment while he was in Hackwood Park and posted the three photos to our Facebook group.

He captioned them: "taken this afternoon feel so privileged to have seen it, a very special moment."

The little fawn can be seen poking its head out of its mother - a fallow deer doe -  as she gives birth in the woods.

According to the British Deer Society, after mating, adult does give birth to a single fawn in June or July after a gestation of 229 days.

Bucks generally live for eight to 10 years although they can live as long as 16 years.

Fallow deer are active 24 hours a day, but make use of open spaces during the hours of darkness in populations experiencing frequent disturbance.

Peak activity is at dawn and dusk with most daytime hours spent ‘lying up’, where they lie down to ruminate between feeding bouts.
