THE 44th annual general meeting of the Probus Club of Basingstoke has marked the club's 45th year of operation.

Originally formed in 1979, the club has provided fellowship for retired professionals with a range of backgrounds including military, legal, scientific, and business sectors.

The newly-appointed leadership team for the club includes president Stephen Thair, a retired solicitor, and vice president John Swain, a former bank note design manager.

They are supported by secretary Andrew Barton, treasurer Dr Jeff Grover, publicity officer Paul Flint, outings organiser Chris Perkins MVO, programme secretary Michael Luck, and welfare officer Dr Nick Waring.

Despite the introduction of the Equalities Act, which allows membership choices for protected interest groups, the all-male Probus Club of Basingstoke opted to retain its existing format.

This decision, helped by the existence of a well-established Ladies' Probus Club in Basingstoke with a similar stance, has seen the club maintain its role as a club for retired men.
