A HOUSE opera based in Hook is returning stronger than ever after a dramatic season filled with both challenges and triumphs.
West Green House Opera (WGHO), which has nurtured young artists for years and created a haven for artistic growth, has faced its fair share of difficulties because it is a notoriously expensive art form.
But, from the whims of British weather to the devastating impact of the pandemic, WGHO always persevered.
However, it was staring at a dark end in April after a key donor unexpectedly withdrew funding. This was just months before its opening night and it threatened the entire season.

Determined to keep the music alive, WGHO launched an emergency appeal, reaching out to loyal patrons, existing donors, and board members.
The response was overwhelming. Within weeks, the financial gap was largely closed, ensuring no programme cuts, staff layoffs, or changes to the original vision.
It has now been decided that this season's operas will be staged in a specially designed auditorium within the heart of the gardens, offering a unique and intimate experience for audiences.
"A few months ago we were faced with having to make some hugely difficult decisions," said artistic director Tom Elwin.
"And my heart sank with the growing fear not only of letting down our audiences but also taking work away from performers for whom I have the greatest respect.
"Thankfully, the West Green family has pulled together like never before, offering solutions from the generously financial to the creatively practical, enabling us to strengthen our Season and keep all our productions exactly we planned them to be. Rehearsals are about to get underway and we so look forward to welcoming audiences both new and returning to what promises to be a week of glorious music in our spectacular garden setting.”

The season kicks off on Friday, July 19 with a dazzling Opera Gala featuring acclaimed performers Nicky Spence and Soraya Mafi, a rising star who began her career at WGHO.
Accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the joyous evening sets the stage for the rest of the season, which includes new productions of Verdi's Falstaff, Rossini's Barber of Seville, and Puccini's Suor Angelica.
For a full experience, patrons can enjoy pre-performance dining on the Lakefield, drinks at the Lakefield Bar, or even become members of the newly formed Opera Club.
