THE opening of a paddling pool in Basingstoke has been delayed because of vandalism.

As previously reported, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has closed Eastrop paddling pool to carry out maintenance work.

Members of the public were hopeful that the facility may re-open soon after noticing that the pool had been filled with water, particularly as this week a heatwave is forecast with temperatures set to hit 28 degrees.

However, the borough council said the re-opening of the pool has been further delayed and it is warning the public not to go in the water.

Tom Payne, the council’s head of environment and community services, said: “We are making good progress in our work to repair and reopen the paddling pool following damage caused over the winter months.

“Our specialist contractors have finished their repairs that were, unfortunately, delayed due to vandalism.”

He said the council hopes to re-open the pool in July, following safety preparations including water testing.

The council will provide updates on its website and social media channels.

Mr Payne added: “In the meantime we would like to remind residents and visitors the fencing around the paddling pool is there for safety reasons, to prevent unauthorised people entering the site, and must not be climbed.

“The pool is not ready to be opened to the public yet and this behaviour could cause serious harm and delay the opening of the padding pool.

“The council’s other water play facility – the splash pad at Chineham Park – is open for families to enjoy.”
