VOTERS concerned about the impacts of climate change quizzed Basingstoke candidates on their plans to help the environment.

Campaigners from Greenpeace attended a hustings event at Saint Mary's Church on Thursday, June 20, organised by OneChurch Basingstoke.

The six candidates; Alan Harvey Stone (Hampshire Independents), Michael Howard-Sorrell (Green Party), Maria Miller (Conservatives), Luke Murphy (Labour), Raymond Saint (Reform UK) and Richard Whelan (Liberal Democrats) were asked about a range of issues including the Camrose and education reform.

According to a report from Greenpeace, more than 70 per cent of people in the UK plan to vote at the General Election with consideration to policies on climate, with similar figures for Basingstoke voters.

Marisa Minunno, from Basingstoke, said: "It was really positive to hear from most candidates about how they will prioritise the climate solutions that will give us lower energy bills, cleaner air, cheaper public transport, warm homes and secure jobs.

"Unfortunately, some candidates wouldn’t commit to prioritising climate solutions.

"As more than 70 per cent of people in the UK plan to vote with climate in mind, they are missing out on lots of potential votes as well as putting our future at risk."

Greenpeace is calling on UK political parties to 'strengthen their plans' to tackle the climate, nature and the cost of living.

In its manifesto, the organisation is asking for help to pay energy bills, wind power, better public transport, and more.

Marisa added that she is part of a 'growing movement of people who all want a safe and secure future for our loved ones'.

She continued: "If you want the same thing, then we'd love for you to join Project Climate Vote, whether it's by putting up an 'I'm a climate voter' poster in your window or joining us on the doorstep."
