A MAN who assaulted a police officer after he stole chocolate and £101 worth of sun cream has been jailed.

Jack Harris, 28, of no fixed abode, has been jailed for shoplifting and assaulting a police officer in Basingstoke.

He stole chocolate from WHSmith on Friday, July 12, and sun cream worth £101 from Tesco in Carpenters Down on Friday, June 7.

He assaulted a police officer during his arrest in the town centre on Friday, July 12.

Harris pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from a shop and common assault of an emergency worker in Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Monday, July 15.

He was jailed for 12 weeks after a suspended sentence order was activated.

A statement from Hampshire Constabulary said: "A man has been jailed for shoplifting and assaulting a police officer in Basingstoke.

"Jack Harris, 28, of no fixed abode, stole chocolate from WHSmith on Friday 12 July and sun cream worth £101 from Tesco on Carpenters Down on Friday 7 June.

"He also assaulted a police officer during his arrest in the town centre on Friday 12 July.

"Harris pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from a shop and common assault of an emergency worker. He also admitted failing to comply with a community protection notice.

"He was jailed for a total of 12 weeks after a suspended sentence order was activated at Basingstoke Magistrates Court yesterday (15 July)."
