IN County competitions, Oakley’s Alice Lovett has reached the quarter finals of the Ladies Singles after defeating former champion Allyson Flint of Cove in the Northern Area Final.
There was, however disappointment for clubmate Martin Vickers as he went down 21-20 in the Men’s Final and for Basingstoke Town’s Annie Carter and Rachel Powell who lost by one shot in the Ladies Pairs.
With Oakley’s Mary Taylor, Sue Dxon and Janie Vickers losing on the last end in the quarter final of the Triples the only other chance, apart from Alice, of a local club being represented in the final stages of the National Championships is in the Pairs where Basingstoke Towns Zac Millar and Adam White have still to play their Area Final.

In the separately run National Competitions, local club players are in several cases just one game away from competing at the National Finals at Leamington Spa. In the Champion of Champions there was a 21-19 win for Town’s Anita Christian over Karen Cranham of Cove.
Christian’s clubmate Rachel Powell beat Alex Tymon 21-7 in the Senior Singles and in the Senior Pairs Oakley’s Ric Newson and Graham Tompkins beat Cove 19-4.
In the Basingstoke and District Men’s League matches Division 1, Basingstoke Town “A” lost 4-0 at Kingsclere, putting Kingsclere just one point behind Alton Social with a game in hand.
There was a first win for Whitchurch “A” as they beat Oakley “A” 3-1. In Division 2, a 4-0 win for Town “B” saw them stay top with a 6 point lead over Hook. The Basingstoke Mixed Triples League Division1, saw Town “A” go down to a first defeat as Old Basing triumphed 4-1. In Division 2 Town “B” stay top just one point above St Mary Bourne.
In the Whitchurch Mixed Triples League Division 1, another Town team, Basingstoke Spades, also went down to a first defeat losing 5-0 at home to Old Basing Cavaliers.
Leadership of the other 3 Divisions did not change but the end of season positions could well be impacted by 10 clubs deciding, because of the clash with England’s UEFA semi-final, to share points rather than play their matches.
