RWE Renewables has put forward proposals for a solar farm on the outskirts of Basingstoke, potentially supplying more than 16,000 homes with clean energy.

Hampshire residents have an opportunity to shape these proposals, which are hoped to offset roughly 1,100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions during its lifetime.

In a bid to tackle climate and ecological crises, Aldermaston Road Solar Farm, located north of Basingstoke, promises to strengthen the UK's energy security with its renewable energy.

On two parcels of land, one in Pamber Green and the other north of Sherborne St John, the proposed solar farm will boost both local and national efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions.

The event aims to offer insights into the project and address any concerns.

An online webinar will be available on August 7 at 6pm for those unable to attend the live event.

Aside from renewable energy, RWE Renewables pledges a minimum 50 per cent biodiversity net gain, exceeding the national requirement fivefold.

Proposed interventions include the construction of beehives, the establishment of wildflower meadows and the installation of bird and bat nesting boxes to uplift wildlife.

Planting trees and hedgerows will provide new habitats for wildlife, offer screening to protect the view for surrounding communities, and provide public space featuring pathways, outdoor picnic areas, picnic areas and other amenities.

Anticipating a project lifespan, the solar farm proposals are designed to be operational while allowing agricultural practices to continue.

Sheep grazing will be permitted on 95 per cent of the plot, improving soil quality and securing future farming after the solar farm’s decommissioning.

Ben Kwok, development project manager at RWE Renewables, said: "These proposals are an important opportunity to help tackle the climate crisis and deliver on local and national energy targets.

"We want this scheme to reflect the wants and needs of local communities and we are very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts throughout this important engagement period."

Following the distribution of an informational newsletter and feedback form to residents, RWE Renewables seeks community feedback through posts or the project's website.

A dedicated email address, info@aldermastonroadsolarfarm.co.uk, is available for community members to raise concerns or questions.

The consultation period will run until August 21.
