I AM writing to express my deep concern over the impending closure of our local ice rink for repairs and refurbishment, and to urge Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to provide a temporary ice rink during this period.
The closure of our ice rink, while necessary and long overdue, for the ice pad to be replaced and the seating areas to be refurbished will leave a significant void in our community. The ice rink is more than just a recreational facility; it is a vital hub for social interaction, physical activity, and community engagement. Skating is a beloved activity for hundreds of local residents, from young children learning to skate, to teams participating in hockey leagues. The absence of this facility deprives these individuals of their chosen sport and exercise routine, which can have broader implications for physical and mental wellbeing.

The ice rink supports local businesses and creates jobs, both directly and indirectly. Skating enthusiasts often utilise nearby cafes, and restaurants, contributing to the local economy. The temporary closure of the rink not only affects skaters but also impacts these businesses. A temporary ice rink would mitigate these economic disruptions by maintaining the flow of visitors to the area.
The provision of a temporary ice rink would also demonstrate the council’s commitment to supporting active lifestyles and promoting community spirit. It would offer a continuity of service that is crucial for our local skating clubs and teams, who rely on regular practice to maintain their skills and competitive edge. Without a temporary facility, these groups face the prospect of travelling significant distances to find alternative rinks, which is neither practical nor sustainable for many.
I urge the council’s Liberal and Independents administration to consider the wide-ranging benefits of a temporary ice rink. Work to gather quotes for a suitable facility will ensure we hit the ground running and is essential as time is now of the essence with negotiations for the scheduled works at the rink due to be agreed imminently. By doing so, this council’s administration will ensure that our community remains active, engaged, and supported during the refurbishment period.
