A HEAT health alert has been issued for Basingstoke and the rest of Hampshire as temperatures are due to reach 31 degrees Celsius next week.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)  put the warning in place across Hampshire on Friday, July 26.

It comes into effect tomorrow, Monday, July 29 at 9am and lasts until Wednesday, July 31 at 11pm.

The yellow warning means there is the "potential for significant impacts to be observed across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures."

According to the Met Office, at the time of writing, Basingstoke will see highs of 31C on Wednesday, which will be hotter than Ibiza.

A statement from UKHSA reads: "There will be an observed increase in mortality across the population likely, particularly in the 65+ age group or those with health conditions, but impacts may also be seen in younger age groups.

"Increased demand for remote healthcare services is also likely.

"Internal temperatures in care settings (hospitals and care homes) may exceed recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment.

"There will be an impact on ability of services to be delivered due to heat effects on workforce possible and many indoor environments likely to be overheating, leading to increased risk to vulnerable people living independently in the community as well as in care settings."
