ON-CALL firefighters from Kingsclere worked with crews from across the border in Berkshire in tackling a tractor fire which spread to the surrounding heathland.

Shortly after midday on Monday, July 29, Kingsclere joined a Newbury crew at the incident in Hamstead Marshall.

The tractor was destroyed in the blaze which then spread to damage half a hectare of heathland.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels and jets to extinguish the fire and dampen down the grass.

On-call firefighters were called to a blaze in Hamstead Marshall (Image: Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service) A fire service spokesperson said: "Fires can start and spread very easily in hot weather. If you’re out enjoying the countryside make sure you follow our safety tips to avoid wildfire."

The fire service has given people tips to avoid wildfire: 

  • Do not discard cigarettes in the countryside; dispose of smoking materials properly and make sure they are completely extinguished
  • Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire
  • Always take extra care if using a barbecue
  • Only light fires or barbecues in designated areas using the facilities provided – and remember, barbecues are not allowed in any part of the New Forest National Park
  • Don’t leave campfires or barbecues unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them
  • Talk to young people about the dangers of playing with and lighting fires
