AS A local councillor, I am deeply disappointed with Basingstoke’s new MP, Luke Murphy, and the new Labour government’s reversal on their promises regarding our new hospital for Basingstoke. During the election campaign, Keir Starmer visited our town and assured us that the hospital would be built by 2030. Now, as expected, they are attempting to renegotiate their commitment under the guise of a review.

The Hampshire Together programme has worked diligently, engaging with thousands of our residents to create a robust plan for our new hospital. This effort should be met with unwavering support and swift action on the progress to date, not political evasion.

Luke Murphy needs to prioritise the needs of Basingstoke over parroting Labour’s political messaging. Our community deserves a representative who will fight for the delivery of the promised hospital, not one who uses the project as a pawn in political games.
The health and wellbeing of Basingstoke residents depend on the timely completion of our hospital. Any delay in providing essential healthcare facilities is unacceptable. We need our MP to hold the Labour government accountable and ensure they follow through on their commitments.

It’s time for Luke Murphy to stand up for Basingstoke and demand the delivery of our new hospital, as promised. Anything less is a betrayal of our community’s trust.

Borough councillor for Sherborne St John and Rooksdown Ward
