THE former mayor of Basingstoke and Deane has thanked residents for helping him raise more than £15,000 for charities.
David Leeks, who served as mayor during 2023 and 2024, confirmed £15,002.91 was raised for his 'Mayor's Charity Appeal' benefitting three charities: Citizens Advice Basingstoke, Citizens Advice Tadley, and Shopmobility Basingstoke.
Each charity received £5,000.97.
The funds came from direct donations and mayoral events including the Basingstoke Variety Show and the Spring Concert.
Mr Leeks, who recently retired after 29 years in the borough council, said: "I would like to thank everyone who supported my charity appeal whether through direct donations or ticket purchases.
"This great show of generosity has meant that these three valued local charities can continue their work to support the people of the borough. It has also provided me with a fantastic ending to my civic career."
Citizens Advice Basingstoke and Tadley provides free advice to vulnerable individuals potentially facing home loss or who struggle to provide for their families.
Shopmobility Basingstoke offers mobility equipment to those facing mobility problems, helping them maintain independence and navigate their city with ease.
