Author battling MND launches debut novel in Basingstoke pub

Stephen Ross' The Candlemaker’s Affair is an exploration of life, love, and loss.

The book was officially unveiled at a celebratory event held at The White Hart — one of the locations in the book — in Basingstoke on Wednesday, August 7.

Speaking to the Gazette at the book launch, Stephen said his diagnosis of MND, which he received just before Christmas, served as a catalyst for accelerating the writing process.

The Candlemaker’s Affair is a coming-of-age story set in Basingstoke, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the lives of a generation shaped by post-war Britain.

Stephen, born and raised in South East London, began his career fixing radios, leading to an apprenticeship with British Telecom.

Intrigued by the potential computers held, he ventured into computer engineering in 1979, facilitating oil exploration industries worldwide.

He eventually settled in Berkshire, with a 40-year long career in the oil industry.

Upon retirement, he decided to lean into writing, leading to the creation of The Candlemaker's Affair.

At the launch event, Stephen was ready with an insightful presentation on the book.

Copies of The Candlemaker’s Affair were available to buy. Stephen is also raising valuable funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association through his book.

Stephen expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from his family and friends.

“It was difficult as a self-publisher, but I’m thrilled to see the book available on Amazon and soon at Waterstones,” he said.
