BASINGSTOKE Multicultural Forum (BMF) has reassured communities that the town remains a 'peaceful and diverse place' amid recent anti-immigration riots across the UK.

BMF trustee Shibaji Shrestha said he has been in contact with local groups and met with MP Luke Murphy.

He said he also visited Basingstoke mosque with the MP to discuss the current situation.

"I would like to assure all communities in Basingstoke and Deane that our town is a peaceful and diverse town," said Mr Shrestha.

"We value and respect each and every community, culture and tradition.

"We are aware of what's going on across the UK, however, Basingstoke is peaceful and we are keeping in touch with community leaders to communicate with their people to keep this peace."

He said the BMF is committed to preserving and promoting cultural diversity in partnership with the council and other non-government organisations.

"We are always looking for peace and safer Basingstoke,” added Mr Shrestha.
