A NURSERY with 'polite and happy' children has been praised by Ofsted inspectors after its hygiene improved.

Littlemonkeys Daycare, at 58/59 Watson Way, Winklebury, achieved the new rating after inspectors visited on July 16.

In a previous report inspectors said the nursery "required improvement," but it has now been upgraded to "Good".

The nursery is said to have addressed the 'weaknesses' raised at the last inspection.

The report said: "Robust systems are now in place to ensure the health and hygiene of children is of utmost priority".

Previously, an inspector found that staff did not understand how to promote children’s good health.

During the previous visit, children were taking part in an activity exploring real food and were encouraged to bite and eat fruit and vegetables before putting them back for other children to explore.

“This does not support children’s good learning and does not help to prevent the spread of infection,” the report said.

Now, inspectors have found staff to have improved on these concerns.

The report reads: "Staff routinely encourage children to look after their personal hygiene. For instance, children use tissues to wipe their noses and they wash their hands before mealtimes. Older children have learned how to manage certain hygiene tasks themselves."

The new report also finds that: "Children are keen learners and confidently share some of the skills they have learned. For instance, children know how to keep themselves and others safe as they explore the local area.

"Children behave well and have good manners. They demonstrate a sense of happiness when playing alongside friends or their chosen staff member."

Leaders and staff are praised for their attention to detail and quality of teaching, providing extra care to children who need it.

The report says: "Leaders have worked closely with staff to identify areas of their practice that could be better, to raise the quality of their teaching.

"Leaders also take into consideration the learning needs of the children in attendance and the educational environment. For instance, leaders identify that some children need extra support to develop their fine motor skills.

"Staff attended training and have developed their teaching to support children's pre-writing skills. For example, children show focus and perseverance as they thread the right number of cubes onto numbered string."

In order to improve the quality of early years provision, inspectors advised the nursery to deploy staff more effectively throughout the day and develop strong partnerships with parents and other professionals.

Littlemonkeys Daycare has been approached for comment.
