PLANS have been submitted for the redevelopment of Sony Europe's business unit in Basingstoke's Viables Industrial Estate.

Property consultancy firm Vail Williams LLP, on behalf of St Modwen Strategic Land Limited, has submitted a full planning application to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for the redevelopment of the Sony Europe site located in Jays Close.

The proposal seeks to demolish the existing buildings and construct two new industrial units, marking a significant transformation for the site.

The Sony site is only half a mile away from the site for the proposed lithium chloride plant at St Modwen Park in Jays Close. This plan was also submitted by Vail Williams LLP, but on behalf of Leverton Clarke Ltd, and was approved by BDBC's development control committee this month.

The Sony site redevelopment includes facilities for research and development (R&D), light industrial, and general industrial use.

The new units will also feature ancillary office space, along with associated infrastructure, improved access, parking, and enhanced landscaping, according to the application.

The site, situated on the southern edge of Basingstoke, is currently home to a three-storey office block constructed in 1987 and expanded in the 1990s.

The current structure is surrounded by parking areas, site circulation spaces, and landscaping.

According to the proposal, the new development aims to improve upon the existing buildings, offering a high-quality design that better integrates with the surrounding industrial estate while maintaining much of the established boundary planting.

A detailed landscape plan is included with the application, proposing the replacement of low-quality planting on the site with a higher quality, more appropriate species mix.

The planning application says careful consideration was given to the site’s context, ensuring that the new buildings will sit comfortably within the existing landscape.

If approved, according to the applicant, the development will provide modern industrial facilities to meet the growing needs of businesses in the area, while also improving the overall aesthetic and functionality of the Viables Industrial Estate.
