A NEW McDonald's opening in Hatch Warren has withdrawn an application asking if it can open 24/7.

The fast food chain had previously asked for permission from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to open from 5am until 5am.

The application also proposed 'late night refreshment' from 11pm until 5am from Monday to Sunday.

The plans sparked objections from residents, who raised concerns about anti-social behaviour, noise and traffic.

Hatch Warren and Beggarwood borough councillor, Stacy Hart, told the Gazette that residents were 'concerned' about the plans and after writing to the council to object against the application 'received dozens of supportive messages'.

According to Cllr Hart, 187 residents sent emails or letters to the borough council to object to the opening hours on the basis that it could 'attract' car meets to the retail park, which has previously been considered a 'hotspot' for anti-social behaviour.

She said: "I'm delighted that McDonald's has withdrawn their 24-hour licence application in Hatch Warren and that the area will not become a hotspot for car meets all over again as a result.

"I'd like to thank every one of the 187 residents that wrote to the licensing committee to state their objections and the dozens that contacted me and wanted to speak alongside me at the hearing.

"This is a testament to how getting involved in local issues and making your voice heard can have a positive impact on your community!"

The borough council had previously scheduled a licensing sub-committee meeting on Friday, September 6, for councillors to decide whether the restaurant would be allowed to open 24/7.

However, the application was withdrawn on Wednesday, September 4 meaning that the McDonald's branch will not be allowed to open overnight, and will be exempt from serving food between 11pm and 5am.

A spokesperson for McDonald's said: "We are excited about the opportunity to open a new restaurant in Hatch Warren, we have listened to residents' concerns and are no longer planning to apply for a 24-hour licence at this stage."
