A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of theft after reports that items had been stolen from a number of stores in Basingstoke.

Police attended an address in Popley on Thursday, September 5, arresting a woman on suspicion of eight counts of theft from a shop.

Officers received reports of shoplifting at One Stop in Shakespeare Road, as well as the Marks and Spencer and Boots stores at Chineham Shopping Centre.

The 40-year-old remains in custody whilst police carry out further enquiries.

A statement from police posted on the Facebook account Basingstoke Cops reads: "Officers investigating reports of shoplifting in Basingstoke have arrested a woman.

"We attended an address in the Popley area this morning (September 5) and made an arrest.

"A 40-year-old woman from Basingstoke has been arrested on suspicion of eight counts of theft from a shop.

"She remains in custody while our enquiries continue.

"It comes after reports of a number of shoplifting incidents at One Stop on Shakespeare Road, and the M&S and Boots stores in Chineham."
