THERE has been much debate recently about our overcrowded prisons and the lack of capacity for those newly convicted and sentenced.

The latest available figures indicate that over 10,000 foreign nationals are in our prisons representing 12% of the total prison population.

In 2023, a total of 3,926 foreign prisoners were removed to serve their sentences in their countries of origin.

Since the pandemic in 2020, there has been a steep fall in deportations. Pre-pandemic between 5,000 and 6,437 foreign offenders were returned each year, with around half being EU nationals.
