THE council has responded to reports of antisocial behaviour at recent car meets, urging people to report incidents to police while the meetings are taking place as it looks at ways to "support prosections."

As previously reported, two large car meets, rife with antisocial behaviour including reports of loud music and drug use, took place in Basingstoke over the weekend with one resident calling it "unacceptable."

Hundreds of people attended the large car meets in the evening on Sunday, September 8.

The first meeting took place in the car park of the Leisure Park at around 7.42pm, before moving to the car park outside Asda in Brighton Hill at around 8.46pm after police issued a dispersal order.

One resident of Gershwin Road, in Brighton Hill, told the Gazette that the noise was going on "well past midnight."

Now, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) has told the Gazette that they it is being "proactive" when it comes to dealing with antisocial behaviour.

A spokesperson for BDBC said: "The council is aware of an unauthorised car meet that took place on the evening of Sunday 8 September at the Leisure Park and then at Asda in Brighton Way.

"As landlord of the Leisure Park, we are pleased that the on-site security team worked swiftly with the police to close the event down.

"The council takes a proactive approach to the antisocial behaviour caused by unauthorised car meets including working with the police and with landowners to look at ways to prevent further incidents and to support prosecutions with evidence from CCTV.

"It is important that antisocial behaviour at car meets is reported to the police while the meet is taking place, so that the police can attend if necessary."
