SWIRLING colours of bright reds and oranges were visible over Basingstoke last night, September 12.
According to the Met Office, red skies appear at sunrise and sunset when dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by high pressure.
The high pressure scatters blue light leaving only red light, which gives the sky the bright hues.

Photos taken by members of the Basingstoke Gazette Camera Club show the crimson sunsets from a number of locations in Basingstoke.
Pam Denton captured images of the sky in Tadley, which she said changed 'from a bright red/orange colour to black cloud in 17 minutes' whilst Adrian Pink snapped a picture of the 'apocalyptic sky' over Old Basing.
Jamie Dunkley said that he enjoyed some 'good food and good sunsets' in the caption for his picture, taken over Waitrose car park.
Tricia Smith showed the light oranges visible in her image overlooking Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) and the town centre.
