BASINGSTOKE’s £2.5m council offices are being marketed for possible redevelopment as a university.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is promoting the 2.6 acre Civic Campus in London Road, valued at £2.5m, for redevelopment, describing it as ‘an ideal opportunity for a public sector organisation or higher education provider’.
Council leader, Councillor Paul Harvey, said the council is keen to bring ‘university level education to the borough’, and that the Civic Campus could provide this opportunity ‘given its central location and great public transport links’.

The site, next to the War Memorial Park, is currently used by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council staff. The Civic Offices are open to the public Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Cllr Harvey said: “If an investment opportunity comes forward for the Civic Campus, we would consider the benefits it would bring for our borough and would work with our staff to consider any relocation opportunities.”
The site includes the 35,000 sq ft Deanes building, 30,000 sq ft Parklands building and the listed 7,500 sq ft Goldings building which is used as Basingstoke Registration Office for wedding ceremonies, and birth and death registrations.
Information promoting the site says it benefits from 300 parking spaces and just under 90,000 sq ft of floor space, including at Eastlands across the road.
Cllr Harvey said: “We are committed to ensuring the borough is a place where people can thrive and where businesses can flourish and we are progressing ambitious regeneration plans, working alongside the private sector. This includes bringing new attractions to the leisure park, revitalising the town centre and breathing new life into our flagship business destination at Basing View.
“As a major landowner in the borough, we have a unique opportunity to attract investment from the private sector to deliver new and exciting opportunities for our residents and businesses, using the land we own.
“We are keen to bring university level education to the borough, complementing what is already on offer at local colleges. The Civic Campus, as well as other sites at Basing View, could provide an ideal opportunity for a public sector organisation or higher education provider, given its central location and great public transport links.”
