SYMBOLS being left on houses and wheelie bins could be 'a mark by persons identifying properties to burgle' say police.

Residents in Hart, including Fleet and Church Crookham, are being urged to 'remain vigilant' by officers from Hampshire Constabulary following reports of graffiti.

Those living in the area have reported noticing their wheelie bins or property being marked with 'some form of symbol', according to police.

The emblem features an isosceles triangle with a circle drawn around the shape, and the letter H in the centre.

Residents are asked to 'report back' to police if they notice the symbol drawn on their property.

Hart South Police posted on Facebook: "Hi all. We have had reports of some people noticing their wheelie bins or property being marked with some form of symbol.

"Whilst this may be someone committing mindless graffiti, it could be a mark left by persons identifying properties to burgle.

"Could I ask that you all look out for your neighbours and yourselves. The Hampshire Constabulary website has some good safety advice so take a look."

The police force is advising residents to keep their house 'visible' as houses with overgrown bushes, trees, high fences or walls 'make it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed'.

To further protect their property, Hampshire Constabulary suggests that houses have CCTV cameras, alarms and lighting installed as a deterrent.
