Basingstoke's MP was featured in a joke on a BBC comedy panel show about the news.

Every Friday evening, comedians and celebrities are quizzed on the week's top headlines on Have I Got News For You.

On October 4, the BBC programme opened with a joke that involved MP Luke Murphy.

Scottish stand-up comedian Kevin Bridges opened the show by saying: "In London, three men about town meet up with their blind dates for the evening."

The programme then cuts to Mr Murphy with Prime Minister Kier Starmer and businessman Theo Paphitis greeting three women.

Reacting to the joke on X, Basingstoke's MP wrote: "When people message you to say you're the first joke on Have I Got News For You your heart does stop."

Replying, Cambden councillor Robert Thompson, said: "I think it means that you have made it in life Luke. Nowhere higher to go now!"

But, not everyone was impressed with the gag, with one person claiming it was 'ageist nonsense'.

Of course, the street used in the programme was not the capital city, but London Street in the Top of the Town.

The clip is taken from the PM's visit in June, during the campaign for votes ahead of the election in July.

During the visit, he met the staff at the Hampshire School of Jewellery at Hassocks Wood Business Centre and the team at the Gabardine Bar, in the Top of Town.

The Basingstoke Gazette contacted Luke Murphy, but he did not wish to comment further about the joke.
