A LORRY driver has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after causing serious injuries in a crash.

The crash, involving an Iveco Eurocargo lorry and a Peugeot Partner van, happened at around 8.20pm last night, Wednesday, October 9, on the A303 eastbound near Basingstoke Crematorium.

The crash prompted the closure of the A303 eastbound between Basingstoke Crematorium and Junction 7 of the M3.

The Peugeot driver, a man in his 30s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The Iveco driver was a 36-year-old man from county Durham.

He was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, driving while unfit through drugs, and causing serious injury by careless driving.

He has been released on bail until November 8 while police carry out further inquiries.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told the Gazette: "We were called at 8.24pm to a collision on the M3 involving a white Peugeot boxer and a white Iveco Eurocargo.

"The driver of the Peugeot, a man in his 30s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"The driver of the Iveco, a 36-year-old man from Birtley, County Durham, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, driving while unfit through drugs and causing serious injury by careless driving.

"He has been bailed until 8 November while further enquiries are carried out."

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Firefighters were called to the A303 eastbound at 8:30 pm on Wednesday following a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

"Fire crews from Winchester and Redbridge freed an individual who was trapped inside a vehicle and handed them into the care of ambulance colleagues.

"The stop message was received at 9:30 pm."
