An event to mark World Homeless Day aimed to "dispel myths" around its causes.

The event, which took place on Thursday, October 10, at Festival Place, was organised by the Basingstoke and Deane Social Inclusion Partnership.

This group of specialist, voluntary, statutory, faith and community groups, including people who have experienced homelessness, are working to reduce homelessness in the borough.

The event provided advice and information from several organisations including The Camrose Centre, Outcome Home, Julian House, Two Saints, Citizens Advice Basingstoke, The Society of St James and Sovereign Housing Association.

Cllr Laura James, the council's cabinet member for housing and residents’ services, said: "World Homeless Day is an opportunity to shine a light on the amazing organisations which work tirelessly to alleviate homelessness here in the borough.

"It’s also a chance to address the many misconceptions that exist around homelessness and rough sleeping."

One person who has benefited from the Social Inclusion Partnership's support is 57-year-old Sam, who was homeless from November 2023 until he sought help at The Camrose Centre in April 2024.

He was provided with clothes, food, shower facilities and emotional support.

He was also offered a place at May Place House, a local hostel, and within a week, there was a noticeable improvement in his physical and emotional well-being.

The Real Change campaign is fundraising for the reopening of the Night Light Winter Shelter, which will provide support and a warm place to sleep for those sleeping rough this winter.

The shelter is set to open from Sunday, December 1.
