A BASINGSTOKE nursery is celebrating after being awarded a Green Flag for its commitment to educating children about the environment.

Cooper Beeches Day Nursery, in Cliddesden Road, was handed the award for the second consecutive year due to its work creating 'passionate young environmentalists'.

The awards are handed out by the educational programme, Eco-Schools, which provides a framework of seven steps to teach young people about the climate.

The programme, owned by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, aims to simplify 'intimidating' environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss or plastic pollution.

Green Flags are handed out to 'forward-thinking' schools that 'promote youth-led environmental education and action'.

In the nursery's report, the programme noted that Cooper Beeches has made students excited about protecting our planet and empowered to make a difference'.

Nursery manager, Charlotte Vines, said: "I’m so proud that we’ve achieved our Green Flag award.

"The children love getting stuck in and coming up with brilliant ways to change our community.

"If the eco committee continues to creatively engage with the environment and do our part to educate future generations then we can make our small corner of the world a better place.”
