A CURRY house has been named as one of the hottest venues in the country, after picking up another national award.

Popular Indian restaurant, Spices and Spirits, in Kings Furlong, has picked up yet another national award, being named as one of the winners of the Best Restaurant category at this year's Curry Life Awards.

Husband and wife restaurant owners, Nitin and Anushree Patil expressed delight at the ceremony, which was held in London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square in Mayfair on Sunday, October 13.

Speaking after the ceremony, Nitin Patil, who takes care of front of house duties, said: "It’s great to be recognised. Anushree wanted to make a business out of her passion and see if people like it, and it's taken off from there."

Anushree, the head chef, added: "My cooking focuses on bringing out flavours rather than toning down the spices or heat. I’ve spent time with chefs from various parts of India, learning and understanding from their experience in restaurants, stately palaces and from street food vendors too."

Anushree had previously been a home cook for many years, catering for small parties while Nitin worked in IT.

Such was the demand for Anushree's food that she planned to find bigger premises to help expand her catering business.

The space they secured turned out to be big enough for a restaurant, leading to the opening of Spices and Spirits in 2019.

The ceremony marked the 15th annual Curry Life awards.

The awards event is an annual celebration of British curry houses, which have an annual turnover of over £4bn

One of the keynote speakers at the awards included Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP.

He commented: "Congratulations to everyone for their success at these awards. The hospitality industry has an enormous contribution to make to our country.

"But there’s something more fundamental about what the hospitality industry does, and what curry houses across the country do, which is about bringing people together, making connections and creating communities.

"It’s about making sure our high streets are thriving, and where people want to spend time and money and enjoy family and friendship.

"In the budget and beyond we will be doing everything that we can not just to support our large businesses, but to support our SMEs too.”
