The Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) is set to host a free PSA testing event.

This will take place on November 16 at Basingstoke Golf Club.

The event aims to raise awareness about the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which recent research suggests is more reliable than previously thought.

The PSA test, a simple blood test, has been the most widely used test for prostate cancer for many years.

However, it has been criticised for giving false positives or negatives.

Despite this, oncologists have argued it is the simplest and most reliable "first guide" test.

Two recent research trials led by Prostate Cancer UK indicate that PSA tests "reduce the number of men who die" from the disease.

Dr Matthew Hobbes, director of Prostate Cancer UK, said: "Historical evidence that PSA tests saved lives was weak.

"Now, the situation has changed; we have strong evidence from two separate trials that PSA testing does reduce the number of men who die from prostate cancer."

Tests at the event are free but cost PCaSO £15 through the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust and NHS laboratories.

Contributions are welcome on the day.

Online booking for the event is open to Basingstoke Golf Club members and the public.
