A MAN was 'punched and knocked unconscious' outside a football stadium after an away match against Basingstoke Town FC.

After a fixture at Frome Town FC stadium on Saturday, October 12, fans were allegedly involved in an assault after the game.

The incident took place outside Badgers Hill Stadium, in Berkeley Road, following the match which saw the clubs draw 1-1 after a 3pm kick-off.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that officers were called to reports of an assault at around 5pm on Saturday.

They added: "The victim had been punched and had been knocked unconscious."

Basingstoke Town FC previously spoke out about the incident, saying they 'strongly condemned' the weekends events.

They added: "To those responsible, we want to make it clear that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated."

"We would like to thank the majority of our fans for your fantastic support throughout the season and hope that together, we can ensure incidents like this do not happen again."

A person was arrested at the scene but was later de-arrested, said the spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police.

They continued: "Enquiries are ongoing.

"If anyone witnessed the incident, or has any other information which could aid officers in their investigation, please call 101 and quote reference 5224269417."
