A FUNDRAISER has been started to support a steward who was assaulted outside a football stadium after an away match against Basingstoke Town FC.

As previously reported, fans were allegedly involved in an assault after a fixture at Frome Town FC stadium on Saturday, October 12.

Radek Evans had been 'punched and knocked unconscious' outside Badgers Hill Stadium in Berkeley Road at around 5pm, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed.

Now, members of the club have started a fundraiser to buy Mr Evans a recycling shed for the football stadium, something he 'dreams of' according to organiser Alex Silk.

"He works tirelessly for charity and for the club and we feel it's only right that we raise the money to get him the shed he dreams of," Mr Silk said.

The GoFundMe has garnered £1,380 out of a £1,500 goal at the time of writing, with the full amount raised going to 'fully equip Radek with everything he needs'.

The Frome Town FC's Supporters Club has also been rallying to raise funds for the cause, holding a bucket collection at matches held at the Badgers Hill Stadium.

Chairman of the club, Lester Silk said in a Facebook post that Radek 'works tirelessly as a volunteer and as a fundraiser', adding: "Now it's time for us to do something for such a fantastic human being."

Basingstoke Town FC condemned the incident in a statement which read: "To those responsible, we want to make it clear that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"We would like to thank the majority of our fans for your fantastic support throughout the season and hope that together, we can ensure incidents like this do not happen again."

The club also urged anyone 'who may have witnessed the incident or have phone footage that can assist in identifying those responsible' to come forward.

Avon and Somerset Police arrested a person at the scene, but they were 'later de-arrested', the force confirmed.

It added: "If anyone witnessed the incident, or has any other information which could aid officers in their investigation, please call 101 and quote reference 5224269417."
