THE TRAFFIC lights on Brighton Hill roundabout have been updated to 'reduce congestion at busier times'.

The roundabout, which cost £20 million and took almost two years to build, has been criticised by drivers for the traffic lights turning red a little too frequently, prompting a lot of 'stop-starting' when navigating the roundabout.

One reader previously said: "Too many red lights. You enter the roundabout and have to stop at the first, second, and sometimes even the third lights."

Another commented that they 'prefer the old layout', adding: "[It] takes 20 mins to get from one side to the other once you stop at every set of lights."

Hampshire County Council updated the lights on Wednesday, October 23, with the roundabout remaining open whilst the work took place.

The updates will mean that the time the lights stay green will vary in accordance with the flow of traffic, with the lights staying green for longer when the roundabout is busier.

According to county councillor Stephen Reid, the junction will be 'closely monitored' whilst the changes settle.

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council told the Gazette: "The traffic lights at Brighton Hill roundabout will be adjusted on Wednesday, October 23 to enable the lights to automatically change according to the flow of traffic.

"This will help to reduce congestion at busier times."
