THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury has made a surprise visit to a church in South Ham.

Most Revd Justin Welby visited St Peter's Church on Sunday, October 27, joining in on one of the church's weekly services called The Four.

The Archbishop gave a talk on his life and journey into faith before leading prayers for members of the church. He also spoke with the congregation, including children who were partaking in arts and crafts.

(Image: Diocese of Winchester) Rector of Basingstoke, Rev John Hudson said that he was excited by the visit, adding: "South Ham is an estate where people imagine those in power have forgotten them.

"So to have the Archbishop of Canterbury choose to come here is saying that people are on their side and Jesus is on their side."

The visit was made as part of a trip to the Diocese of Winchester to see initiatives run by churches and chaplaincies in the region.

Archbishop Justin said: "This visit has been absolutely fantastic. I think the memorable thing for me is the sheer variety of what we've done.

"Going through Southampton Port with the Mission for Seafarers, visiting a dementia support club and listening to carers and being able to pray with them.

"I have found, in the diocese, a huge willingness and desire to be those who share their faith and to bring others in, and to form community.

"I am overwhelmed by the sheer hard-working dedication of the people who work in the diocese and of the lay people and clergy who seek to serve the Lord in all that they do."
