A FAST food chain has launched a popcorn milkshake, but is it innovative and could it join the ranks of beloved flavours such as chocolate and vanilla, or is it just a fad?

Five Guys in Festival Place has launched a new flavour of shake to join its evergrowing list of options including the classics as well as more obscure flavours such as bacon and mango.

As a self-proclaimed popcorn connoisseur and an avid cinema lover, when the fast food chain invited me and my colleague to try the milkshake, I was keen to see whether it could serve as a treat worthy of the big screen.

Coming in at a whopping £5.75, the drink isn't exactly cheap, although I suppose nothing is these days, although it does come in just below the price of a regular popcorn at nearby Vue, which would set you back approximately £6.

If when faced with the decision of sweet, salty or mixed, at the cinema you pick salty then this drink isn't for you. However, if your poison lies on the sweet side, then you're certain to enjoy the shake.

The combination of the popcorn pieces and the syrup does make the beverage a little bit sickly, especially when you add the cream, but I was shocked at how remarkably close it tastes to the snack itself.

My colleague Matt Rooks-Taylor joined my adventure, eloquently describing the drink as 'very popcorny'. He too agreed that the beverage is 'quite spenny', although he remarked that the size and use of fresh ice cream does reflect the price tag.

Unlike me, Matt rarely visits the cinema, but he did say it would make a 'good accompaniment' and as someone with a sweet tooth, he added that it did indeed 'hit the spot'.

To sum it up, Matt said: "Is it worth six quid? Probably not, but at least it's delicious."

As for my thoughts, I can't say I'll be ditching my tried and true cinema snack of sweet popcorn for this shake, but it's a nice treat every now and then, although, it doesn't compare to a nice banana shake.
