MYSTERY surrounds how a Greggs 'opening soon' sign was found dumped behind a derelict building after the company said it does not belong to them, despite it having the popular bakery’s branding on it.
As previously reported, a sign letting people know that a new Greggs is ‘coming soon’ to a service station on the A339 in Kingsclere was taken down and dumped behind an empty building.
The Gazette asked Greggs for further information about the sign and whether it has plans to open a branch at the service station.
Despite the obvious branding with Greggs' name and logo, a spokesperson for Greggs told the Gazette: “It’s not our sign”.

Asked whether a Greggs will be opening at the site, the spokesperson said: “Greggs currently has no plans to open a shop at this site and was not involved in the signage that appeared at the location.”
The popular bakery chain was given planning permission to open at the service station in 2022, by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
The application, submitted by Wyeth Projects Services, asked to extend the forecourt shop building at the service station with a ‘food to go’ area, storeroom and accessible toilet.
The planning statement said: “The extension will provide space for new additional walk-in chiller and freezer units together with better merchandising storage options.”
The services, which includes a Shell petrol station, used to have a Little Chef restaurant which closed in 2001 before reopening at Nelson’s Diner which is now closed.
