THE council has responded to reports of spiking in a new nightclub at the Top of Town, saying it is taking the safety of residents "very seriously."

As previously reported, two women aged in their 20s and 30s were spiked in Labyrinth night club in Winchester Street during the night of Saturday, November 16.

One of the women had her drink spiked while the other was physically spiked with a needle.

Police have launched an investigation into the incidents and are urging anyone with information to get in touch.

Now, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) has responded to the reports, stating it is working closely with police to ensure safeguarding.

A spokesperson for BDBC said: "We are aware of the recent allegations of spiking at Labyrinth nightclub. As this is a live police investigation, we cannot comment on the specific allegations.

"As the licensing authority for Basingstoke and Deane, the borough council takes the safety of our residents and visitors very seriously.

"Our licensing officers and community safety officers continue to work closely with the police to provide licensees with safeguarding support, advice and information."
