AN ATHLETE from Basingstoke says she "can't wait" to represent the country after securing a place in Team GB with a stunning trial performance.

Maddie Deadman, 24, from Basingstoke braved the elements and secured first place in the European Short Course Trials in Liverpool on Saturday, November 23.

The cross country trial event saw her take on a 1.5km course during the height of Storm Bert, which made for a particularly challenging race with high winds and heavy rain.

Her victory not only earned her the title but also secured her automatic selection for Team GB at the upcoming European Cross Country Championships in Turkey on Sunday, December 8.

"To say I’m shocked is an understatement," said Maddie.

"This past week has been a whirlwind of emotions, and I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from my family and friends.

"It’s hard to believe that it’s finally happening, I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet."

Maddie explained how she felt confident enough to take the lead during her trial, and was encouraged by the crowd cheering her name.

She said: "The race day itself was very cold and windy. My initial strategy was to run with a group of girls and make a move halfway through.

"However, I felt strong from the start, and decided to take the lead, which made handling corners easier.

"As I approached the finish line, the crowd was amazing and cheering my name which spurred me on into the finish."

Now officially a member of Team GB, Maddie will represent the country this weekend as one of the members among the Mixed GB Relay Quartet, with the event due to be broadcast live at 7.55pm on Sunday, November 8 - readers can watch her on BBC One's Red Button service.

Maddie added: "I will be heading to Turkey with the GB Team, to compete in the cross country Mixed Relay event over 1500m.

"I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to represent Great Britain at the European Championships."

Maddie thanked her coach, and explained how he helped her to persevere.

She said: "While I had felt positive about my training leading up to the race, I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

"My coach, Rod Finch, played a crucial role in boosting my confidence. He sat me down and reassured me that he believed in my abilities and encouraged me to trust in the hard work and miles I had put in."

Basingstoke Athletics Club praised Maddie for her achievement, commending her hard work and determination.

A spokesperson said: "Maddie’s achievement is a testament to her hard work, determination, and the strength of the athletic community here in Basingstoke.

"She’s a shining example of local talent making waves on the international stage, and we believe her journey—rooted right here in our community—deserves to be celebrated."
