Basingstoke Town have announced that Billy Upton has been chosen as the new club captain, succeeding Simon Dunn, whose recent retirement marked the end of an era for the team.

Upton, who joined Basingstoke Town from Badshot Lea ahead of their historic treble-winning campaign, has made a strong impression both on and off the pitch.

The decision was made official during a meeting with manager Dan Brownlie, Upton, outgoing captain Dunn, and coach Aaron Nicholson.

“Watching Dunny, someone I trusted so implicitly with the role, hand it over to Billy felt right,” said Brownlie.

“Captaincy here is more than a token gesture; it’s a real responsibility. Dunny said some really lovely things. We’re proud Billy has taken the role on, and I believe this will bring out the best in him. He’s one of the best people.”

Upton’s path to leadership began somewhat 'improvised' during a match against Poole Town.

“At halftime, Michael Atkinson, who was captain that day, had to come off with a hamstring injury," Brownlie said.

"I looked over and saw Acko handing the armband to Billy like he was passing him a bag of crisps. Billy glanced at it, then at me, and laughed. I shrugged and said, ‘Fair enough.’ Just like that, Billy became captain. Leadership chosen by pure proximity.

“But whilst Billy’s origin story is pretty on brand for him – over the recent months he’s stepped into the role brilliantly. He’s become a trusted voice. He’s become a motivator and there is a greater sense of belief within himself. It’s been really enjoyable to watch. He’s got a brilliant family around him and the care they show for each other is reflected within his personality – and that extends into how he treats others. That’s important.”
