PUPILS at an under-threat Basingstoke school have turned to music to help the campaign to save it from closure.
The song Save Our School was written by Chineham Park Primary School head teacher Gwen Clifford, and her pupils have now recorded it and produced a video to go on YouTube.
The school in Shakespeare Road, Popley, could be shut down next year by Hampshire County Council because of its poor performance and falling pupil numbers.
But staff, parents and pupils are determined not to give up without a fight.
Mrs Clifford said: “The children wanted to do something collectively to have their say, and singing a song seemed the best way to do that because it’s a way to include everybody.
“The children have all written letters saying what they like about the school and why they want to save the school, and their words form the basis of the lyrics for the song.”
Helped by a team from Out of the Ark Music, who produce songs for primary schools, the video will be uploaded to YouTube tomorrow. Proceeds from any CD sales of the song will go to the Children in Need charity appeal.
Mrs Clifford said: “The children have had a great time making the song. From the point of view of learning, it’s great for the children to go up to a recording studio and have their song professionally recorded.”
Parent Sharon Lunnon, who has been leading the campaign to save the school, said: “This will raise awareness and support for our campaign to save the school from closure. This is the children’s chance to have their say on the potential closure.”
A consultation over the possible closure started in October. It ends this week and a decision will be made by Hampshire County Council education chief Council-lor David Kirk on December 17.
