VISITORS to The Malls shopping centre will have the opportunity to find out information, advice and support on domestic abuse today as part of National White Ribbon day.

Staff from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Sentinel Housing Association, Kingfisher HVHS, Affinity Sutton and the Hampton Trust will be on hand, opposite Sainsbury’s, to offer advice and support on dealing with domestic abuse.

The event is being held to raise awareness of domestic abuse in aid of the United Nations’ Inter-national Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, known as White Ribbon Day.

Councillor Clive Sanders, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Cabinet member for community safety, development and transport, said: “Domestic abuse can have lasting impact and harm on victims and their families. On average there are up to 700 cases of domestic abuse reported in the borough every year, and that is probably less than a quarter of those incidents that take place.

“This shows domestic abuse is not something that happens elsewhere. It happens in our community, perhaps even among our friends and families.

“Events such as White Ribbon Day are important in reminding all of us that domestic abuse is something that has to be dealt with in partnership to ensure that those in need get the help they require.”
