ANOTHER big business name is set leave Basingstoke.

Alberto Culver, the hair-care and beauty product company, is to close its office in Lime Tree Way, on Hampshire International Business Park, Chineham, in October, with the loss of 90 jobs to the town.

In May the company was acquired by Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Unilever, and the Chineham office was its UK headquarters.

About 40 people will be made redundant, with most of the remainder being shifted to the Unilever head office in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Alberto Culver has been prominent in the town for its sponsorship of the annual Run4fun4men at Down Grange in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The company has now joined the ranks of businesses leaving the borough in the last four months, including De La Rue Holographics, ST Ericsson and Friends Provident.

Last week the company’s TRESemmé Professional Salon closed and this will be followed by closure of the departments dealing with marketing, research and development, public relations and sales.

Unilever corporate media relations manager Paul Matthews said: “After we acquired the Alberto Culver business in May 2011, we carried out a thorough review to determine how we should integrate this business into Unilever UK and Ireland to ensure we realise our ambitions for their great brands like TRESemmé, VO5 and Simple.”

He added: "While it was hugely important for us to employ the considerable knowledge and expertise which already existed in the Alberto Culver business, we also needed to take into account the significant synergies which exist between both companies.”

He said those made redundant would be offered “a full package of support”.

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller was disappointed to hear the news. She said: “Every job is really important and its sad that Unilever has made this decision.”

She added: “It’s never been more important to make sure Basingstoke remains a good place to do business and the work that the borough council is undertaking on Basing View is a critical part of that process.”

This week’s Monday Gazette reported that nearly 60 jobs are at risk at print firm Wyndeham Impact, on West Ham Trading Estate in Basingstoke, with the workers taking industrial action over the closure threat.

And last week The Gazette reported that Wella, which is owned by Procter and Gamble, is to close its offices in Wella Road, where 100 staff were offered the option of either moving to other P&G locations or taking voluntary redundancy.

Last month De La Rue confirmed that it is in talks with 100 employees who work at De La Rue Holographics, in Stroudley Road, as the facility has been earmarked for closure, with production set to move to De La Rue Security Threads, in Westhoughton, near Bolton.

In July, life insurance company Friends Provident announced that it is to close its town office at Dextra Court, in Chapel Hill, Basingstoke with the loss of 155 jobs.

Telecoms company ST Ericsson announced in June that up to 139 people could be made redundant when it closes its Maplewood base in Chineham Park.

And in February, Macmillan Distribution announced that it was closing its Basingstoke book warehouse in Brunel Road, on the Houndmills Industrial Estate, with a potential loss of 35 jobs.
