BASINGSTOKE RFC are just one point off second-placed Chichester in the London One South standings after beating the Sussex side 26-16 at Down Grange on Saturday.
The hosts led 9-6 following an early flurry of penalties and scored the opening try of the game through centre Freddie Gleadowe on 33 minutes.
They were 14-6 in front at the break and while Chichester kicked another penalty early in the second-half, a second try of the game for Gleadowe and Gareth Kelly's score put 'Stoke 26-9 ahead.
The visitors pulled seven points back by scoring a converted try - but Basingstoke held on to win, denying Chichester any league points.
