BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants athletes claimed a quartet of medals at the Hampshire Cross Country Championships.
The top performers were the under-17 women’s team, who dominated the event to claim gold. Charlotte Chalwin was the first Basingstoke runner home, winning individual bronze, just ahead of Jenny Helyar, who was fourth, Gemma Wildash, who finished fifth, and Freya Davis, who came sixth.
The result was a comfortable victory in the team event, with Basingstoke winning for the very first time at county level.
The under-17 men did almost as well, collecting team silver. Brendan O’Connor was the top performer, finishing sixth, just ahead of Ollie Butler, who came seventh, and Richard Fernando, who was eighth. Luca Chiossone was the fourth member of the team and his 16th place finish was enough to earn the Down Grange club second overall.
There was another medal for Basingstoke in the under-15 girls race. Lucy Wildash ran an excellent race but was just tailed off by two girls a year older than her and had to settle for the bronze medal.
John Hutchins finished fourth in the senior men’s race, held over 12km, helping the Basingstoke team to fourth place overall.
Jerome Courtois finished sixth in the under-13 boys race, Jack Ladhams was 10th in the under-15 boys race and Tayla Wegg was the best under-13 girl, finishing 14th.
