JASON Bristow felt his Basingstoke Town side deserved at least a point for their efforts against in-form Welling United.

Wes Daly’s last minute penalty miss denied Town a draw at the Camrose on Saturday – but manager Bristow was able to take plenty of heart from his team’s performance.

“A point was the very least we deserved today,” he said. “The result is disappointing – but the performance was not.

“Even if we had got a draw, we would have thought it could have been more, which just goes to show how far we have come in the past few weeks.

“We dominated a good side for long periods of the game and I thought we were the better side in almost every aspect of the game. I’m hurting because I feel for the players.”

Daly has now missed his last two penalties, having blasted over against Farnborough earlier this month – and the decision to keep the midfielder on spot-kick duty is not one Bristow regrets.

“We had a conversation with Wes after he missed the penalty against Farnborough,” the Basingstoke boss added. “He said he wanted to take the next one. If somebody else had taken it and missed it, we would have been wondering what might have happened if Wes took it.”

Off the field, Simon Dunn’s excellent form has been rewarded, with the young midfielder being handed a contract until the end of the season.

“I am pleased that Simon has signed a contract,” Bristow added. “He is a fantastic player already and a really good prospect for the club. His energy and technical ability is fantastic and this contract is just reward for his efforts.”
