CAPTAIN Roy Pike’s Queens D side tore apart their opponents, Aldworth C, in a 9-1 win which increases their chances of finishing in the top three in Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League Division Two.
The player of the night was Colin Chapman, who won all three of his matches without dropping a game. Mike Chamberlain and Pike were also on good form, taking a double and treble respectively.
In the final match of the evening, Charlie Morrison prevented the whitewash by taking a point for Aldworth C by beating Chamberlain in a close three game match 12-10, 11-9, 11-9.
It took a combined effort from all three players for Oakley A to salvage a 5-5 draw against Portals. The top performance from Oakley was by Jamie Cole, who won two for his team but didn’t have the strength to beat Steve Redstall, losing in three games.
Redstall was not troubled in taking a treble and, with two wins from teammate Peter Blunden, the pair could have won the match had they won the doubles but lost in the fifth game 11-4.
The fixture between Queens G and Aldworth B, saw Amy Blagbrough return from injury and take a double as Aldworth B won 8-2.
Sue Tompsett also only won two as the pair both lost to Queens’ Robin Burns who beat Blagbrough in the fifth game.
The experienced use of the pimples from Burns caused trouble for Aldworth, even having a close game with Patrick Garlick despite losing 3-1.
Garlick said: “It was a good performance from Robin and Sue and Amy have a lot to learn still about how to play pimples.”
In the only match that took place in Division Three this week, AWE B went down to KG C by the narrowest of margins 6-4.
All members of the winning side contributed equally to their victory as John Davey, Mike Wood and Dave Partridge all took two points.
They were all denied their treble by the formidable John McLarty who took his three wins without dropping a set. McLarty teamed up with Robin Treadwell in the doubles against Davey and Partridge to take the match of the night 11-7 in the fifth.
