BASINGSTOKE Town Football Club's FA Cup dream is still alive after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with local rivals Aldershot Town.
A goal from Joe Bruce gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead just before half-time - a lead they held until 13 minutes from the end when sustained pressure from their higher-league Nationwide Conference opponents told and John Grant netted.
However, Town's heroes - who fought a terrific rearguard effort in the second half - held out to set up a lucrative replay at Basingstoke's Camrose ground on Tuesday, December 12.
Although both clubs are out to land a place in the third round for the first time in their history, neither will be happy with yesterday's draw.
Ball 63 was second out of the draw - giving the winners of the replay an away trip to League One side Blackpool.
Although both clubs would have wanted to be drawn against one of the Premiership's big clubs, there is still a massive pay cheque awaiting the winners who progress to the third round.
Giving his reaction to the draw, Basingstoke manager Francis Vines said: "Blackpool is a very hard tie but it would be a good day out for the fans, especially as Blackpool have recently redeveloped their ground.
"It's not the glamour tie that either club would have wanted - but we have just got to make sure that we get through."
Basingstoke Town president Rafi Razzak, chairman of main club sponsor Centerprise International, paid tribute to the true grit shown by the Town players at Aldershot on Saturday - and he urged the Basingstoke public to turn out in force for the replay.
Speaking after Saturday's game, Mr Razzak said: "The team showed real commitment and heart today. It was a very tough match but they kept going and there were some outstanding performances.
"The support from the Basingstoke fans was superb. Now, it is vital that people come along to the Camrose to support the team for the replay on December 12.
"The fans need to turn the Camrose into a cauldron of noise. If we get the right amount of support, it will be worth an extra man to our players."
