UP-AND-COMING Basingstoke boxer Greg Bridet has his sights set on victory as he prepares to make his Great Britain debut.
The Eastrop heavyweight will fight his first bout for GB at the international Tammer Tournament, in Finland, later today.
The four-day event will see amateur boxers from numerous countries do battle – and Bridet is out to make his debut a winning one.
“Hopefully I can step up to the test and I am confident that I can do well,” he said. “That is what has got me where I am now and I believe I can go there and get gold.”
The former Harriet Costello School pupil has clearly impressed since being called up to the GB Development Boxing Squad in March.
He spends every other weekend training with top coaches in Sheffield and achieved one of his aims in April, when he won the Amateur Boxing Association British title, beating Durham’s Declan Fusco in the final.
Representing GB was the 23-year-old’s next target – and he is delighted to have managed that as well.
“I am definitely looking forward to it,” Bridet added. “Being called up shows the selectors feel I am ready to go and fight for Great Britain.
“It is the first time I have fought for Great Britain and it will be a bit different but it will be great experience and there are a few rounds to get through.”
Bridet’s ultimate aim is to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but to have any chance of doing that, he must force his way into the elite Podium Squad, who train full-time in Yorkshire.
“The 2016 Olympics is my aim,” he said. “That is the point of the development squad. We are supposed to be the up-and-coming fighters.
“If I can impress on the international stage, I might have a chance of being moved into the podium squad.”
