HOOK and Newnham Basics served up a victory in their brand new kit sponsored from the Hook Tandoori last Sunday in the Southern League T20 Cup first round encounter.
Representatives of the restaurant and take away were on hand hoping a win would be on the menu and Hook did not disappoint with a 14 run success over Old Tauntonians and Romsey.
Mohammed Islam of Tandoori Hook said: “We are delighted to sponsor our local team and it was really pleasing to see them win in the new kit.”
Keith Lovelock, Hook and Newnham CC chairman said: “Without such support from local businesses the club could not run. We are a progressive club with senior teams in the Southern League and the top Hampshire leagues.
“In the last 25 years we have given a great start in cricketing life to thousands of local youngsters currently having 90 plus members from under nine to 18 and nearly 50 all stars under sevens.”
In the game itself the home side batted first and were bowled out for 122 in 20 overs.
Matt Buckingham top scored with 54, with Josh Buckingham (16) and Alex Brown (11) were the next best scorers.
In reply, opener Elliot Mitchell-Lee made 41, but they finished short of their target on 108-9.
Anik Divecha (4-17) was the chief wicket taker and he was well supported by Rhodes Franklin (2-18) and Harry Warner (2-20).
Their reward for the win is a home tie in round two on July 1 (3pm) against Burridge.
The previous day in their Southern League Division One, Hook lost out by three wickets in a low scoring game at reigning champions Calmore Sports.
Having decided to bat, Hook soon found themselves in trouble at 12-3, as both Richard Willcock and Matt Love failed to score.
Warner (26) and Matt Buckingham (9) put on 23 for the next wicket and then top scorer Jordan Hobday (32) from 33 balls moved things to 74-5, before he was out. Warner and Franklin (19) got the score to 99, before Franklin was dismissed.
Number 10 Shane Brewer was the only other player to make it into double figures with 14, as Hook were all out for 126 in 44 overs.
The home side’s reply was soon on the rocks as Brewer and Ben Peart struck leaving them 19-2.
Calmore’s Ben Johns (36) and James Manning (26) then put on 42 for the third wicket. as they eventually won with seven wickets down Third placed Hook face a visit from leaders Bournemouth on Saturday.
