HOOK and Newnham Basics lost out in another high scoring Southern League Division One clash against visiting Ventnor.
Having won the toss, the Isle of Wight side decided to bat and it proved to be a good move.
Opener Tom Friend led the way with a superb 106 and shared a 122 first wicket partnership with Harry Dye (50).
He was bowled by Anik Divecha (1-33), but Friend and Martin Blackman (60) added another 90 for the second wicket, before the century man departed.
Neil Westhorpe took up the mantle late on as Ventnor reached 298-7 from their 50 overs, with Hook captain Matt Love (3-40) the chief wicket taker.
Hook’s reply did not start well with opening pair Richard Willcock and Jordan Hobday, both out with only 13 scored.
From here the home side fought their way back, as Harry Warner (31) and Matt Love (22) moved the score to 61.
Matt Buckingham (49) then kept the scoreboard ticking over and Alex Brown (60) coming in at number eight helped the score past 200 as they were all out for 228.
This Saturday, Hook are on their travels to third placed Portsmouth.
